Increasing XGS-PON deployments
The pandemic has been a major catalyst behind the rapid increase of XGS-PON deployments. With so many people working, learning, and consuming content from home, the demand for bandwidth skyrocketed sharply and put a strain on existing networks. XGS-PON can deliver both the capacity and data transfer speeds needed to meet this demand.
Benefits of XGS-PON
XGS-PON represents a significant upgrade over PON variants such as gigabit PON (GPON) or XG-PON. In contrast to GPON which supports relatively more modest 2.5G downstream and 1.2G upstream data rates, XGS-PON is able to deliver 10 Gbps data rates. While XG-PON also can deliver the same data rate, XGS-PON delivers a symmetrical 10Gbps, supporting 10Gbps data rates for both upstream and downstream data transfer. This gives it an advantage over the other PON deployments, making it an excellent fit with FTTH networks. It also offers greater scalability for increasing data demands.
The increasing affordability of equipment is also driving XGS-PON deployments. With declining costs of XGS-PON equipment, it has become a more viable solution from a cost performance perspective. This makes it more attractive for service providers to adopt on a greater scale and is why deployments of XGS-PON are increasing. Projections indicate that XGS-PON deployments will increase significantly as they are poised to take up over 50% of the overall PON market by 2026.
Newer opportunities for integration in the mobile backhaul are also contributing to the growth of XGS-PON deployments. XGS-PON can be used for 5G backhaul, which carries data between the cell towers and the internet in a 5G network.
Flexible migration path
XGS-PON also offers a significantly more flexible migration path. This is one of the key concerns for operators and XGS-PON’s ability to be integrated into existing FTTH architectures, allows operators to maintain flexibility. XGS-PON operates at different wavelengths downstream and upstream, which ensures that it can be integrated on the same fiber as GPON.
XGS-PON enables operators to simultaneously overlay a much higher-capacity FTTH technology on the existing GPON fiber networks. The operator is able to leverage this characteristic to offer differentiated multigigabit services while increasing the network’s capacity to deliver Gigabit services, making it an essential aspect of gigabit networks. By integrating XGS-PON, operators are essentially future-proofing their networks, which is invaluable in this landscape where data requirements are constantly evolving.
