10G Tunables

Network Optimization

Axiom Connectivity DWDM 10G tunable transceivers address the limitations of fixed-wavelength transceivers as well as the cost concerns of additional fiber procurement. Axiom Connectivity tunables deliver data rates of 10Gb/s or higher at distances of up to 80km and simplify inventory management, making them the ideal solution for modern networks.

DWDM Overview

Tunable transceivers utilize WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) to transfer multiple optical signals over a single strand of fiber. In WDM, a multiplexer (Mux) combines the light signals into a unified signal that is transmitted across the fiber, while a demultiplexer (Demux) is used to convert the received unified signal back to the original signals. This technology increases the capacity per fiber to reduce the fiber needed in a network.

DWDM (Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is a type of WDM that involves a more concentrated and denser range of the electromagnetic spectrum. DWDM covers the C-Band frequency by operating in increments of 0.4nm (50GHz) within the 1530nm-1565nm range, offering significantly more channels than standard or CWDM transceivers.

Advantages of Tunables

DWDM can involve 96 channels or more, which means that networks that deploy fixed-wavelengths DWDM transceivers will need to stock up to 96 spare transceivers for each of those channels. In addition, because transceivers at both ends of the fiber operate on the same wavelengths, each fixed-wavelength transceiver must be paired with a counterpart of the same SKU/part number. The high costs for contingencies and the inability to be tuned to any of the channels DWDM has to offer are huge limitations of fixed-wavelength transceivers.

DWDM Wavelength-tunable transceivers address the limitations of fixed-wavelength DWDM transceivers. With tunable transceivers, network operators are able to tune wavelengths to pair transceivers. Easily swap out a defective transceiver with a wavelength-flexible transceiver and simply the adjust the new transceiver to the matching wavelength. Gone are the days with multiple SKUs or part numbers to worry about. Streamline your inventory on a one-size-fits-all scheme with 1 part number required to cover the full C-Band.

Introducing Autotune

Manual tuning of transceivers can be cumbersome and error-prone especially in sophisticated network architectures. Axiom DWDM tunable transceivers featuring Autotune delivers automated tuning on your transceivers as they auto-scan for available wavelengths to establish a handshake and transceiver lock.

The plug-and-play aspect of Autotune-enabled transceivers allows for easy, hassle-free installation without host system intervention. Tracking fibers from the transceivers to the DWDM Mux/Demux module to determine the correct fiber can be a challenge for technicians given the lengthy distances between the two, which can be separated by as much as 2 kilometers. Autotune eliminates the need to track fibers altogether.

For certain equipment, tunable transceivers are unable to be manually tuned through the CLI (Command Line Interface), which means the use of a tuning box is required. Autotune offers automatic configuration of wavelengths to mitigate the potential strain on operation logistics that can result from the extra time and effort brought forth by manual tuning. Autotune cuts down transceiver tuning time from hours to minutes to maximize network management efficiency.
