Axiom Connectivity is excited to announce its new 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28 transceiver, which delivers 100G data rates at distances of 80km, eight times the distance covered by LR4 transceivers and twice that of ER4 transceivers. QSFP28 ZR4 transceivers transmit four 25Gbps signals and multiplexes the 1296nm, 1300nm, 1305nm and 1309nm wavelength-lasers via LWDM (Light Wavelength Division Multiplexing) to transfer data quickly across a single-mode fiber.
SOAs (Semiconductor Optical Amplifier) are integrated on ZR4 transceivers to amplify the signal as it travels through the fiber. This gives QSFP28 ZR4 transceivers a significant cost advantage over DWDM-based QSFP28 PAM4 transceivers which require extra amplification equipment such as EDFA or other booster technology to cover distances greater than 40km. The compact sizing of QSFP28 ZR4 transceivers also makes them better suited for modern networks compared to larger 100G CFP/CFP2 transceivers.
